What to expect in your Support Worker interview

career advice

If this is your first time going into an interview for a Support Worker job or you’ve had a few but just need some more advice, then read on below. We’ve put together some tips on how to ace your interview whether you’re new to social care or experienced in the industry. Going for an interview for a Support Worker isn’t much different to any other interview, except that your employer might be looking for some particular traits essential to work in social care.

The basics

Some things which might not seem like much, but actually show you to be professional and serious about the role you’re applying for, are quick and easy to do. Plan your journey ahead of time so you get there with time to spare, dressing appropriately, and researching the employer are always good, quick wins for any interview.

Preparation

Review on the current policies and research into what your responsibilities will include. Search these on websites such as Department of Health and Social Care for the latest information on safeguarding and delivering care to a service user.

Think about experience

Think of the skills you can bring to the role. Whether you are experienced in social care or not, you will still have some skills you can bring (are you a good team player for example). You may be asked how you would deal with a difficult situation. If you don’t have actual experience its ok to talk about your voluntary experience, or to refer back to your training. Think about the challenge, your thought process to solve it and what the outcome was.  You might not have found a solution but you can show what you learnt from the experience to demonstrate how you can learn from your experiences and be adaptable.

Show you care

Employers essentially are looking for the same thing; someone who can demonstrate their service users will be cared for and are in safe hands. This is your opportunity to show these skills, to show you can work well under pressure and that you’re confident to provide the service needed.
